Victory loves preparation. To be successful, we have to be prepared for it. This involves coming up a plan. A plan according to the Cambridge online dictionary is a set of decisions about how to do something in the future. In other words, we are thinking about the future when we are planning. Planning is the key to success.

Despite planning being the key to success, it is often taken for granted. Most people usually skip the planning stage. They see planning as a waste of time and effort, and/or unnecessary. They just want to dive right in. Planning is seen as an extra work. Another reason why most people don’t plan is that they argued that the future is uncertain. Nobody knows what will happen in the future. They are living for the moment. Tomorrow doesn’t matter.

One fact about planning is that our thoughts is on the task. We get to know its magnitude and the desired output. It is much easier to do a task which you know than the one you have no idea of. One of the mistake that we make is when we make assumptions. Assumptions comes from the state of unknown. What we don’t known, we tend to either assume or speculate. Planning eliminates assumptions. We get to know the task inside out. How big it is, where to start and finish, how to approach it, what tools we need, and so forth. When we are planning we are not only thinking about the task but also doing it. We are winning the war before it has begun.

Planning will save us a lot of trouble in the future. We are aware of what we are supposed to do. We know our limits and boundaries. This will help us avoid wasting resources on what we are not supposed to do. It is so disappointing to discover that we have been spend a lot of effort on the wrong things. Knowing the limits of our abilities prevents us from doing harm. We will seek help instead of trying to do what we can’t do. This help us avoid unnecessary stress and hustle.

When we plan we are setting out a clear path. This make our work easier. We know what to do and what not to do. It help us prepare for the known and the unknown. We will be able to fully utilize the resources at our disposal.

Coming up with a plan shows us our commitment. It shows that we really want to do the job. The flow of work keep our focus on the task. A plan can also be used to show others what we are doing. Others can tell of our level of commitment based on our plan. People with plans are usually taken seriously. Those without are considered risky as it is not known whether they will abandon ship at the first sign of trouble.

Having a plan doesn’t guarantee success. The plan has to be good. It has to be SMART. Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and within a reasonable Time period. Sometimes it takes lot of research has to be done to come up with an effective plan. This will help us accommodate the known and the unknown.

Success is never by accident. We have to be prepared for it. Planning is the first step of success. it simplifies the task and saves us a lot of pain in the long run. It also shows that we are really committed. However, having a plan is not enough, we have to implement it.
